What to Wear to an Interview in the Middle East: Business Attire Tips

While the rules of business attire are similar across most countries, there are some subtle differences that you need to be aware of in Dubai and the UAE.

If you have a job interview coming up, it’s important to know what to wear. Keep in mind that the best way to figure out what’s appropriate is to ask your interviewer, however below we provide some advice for both men and women.

How should women dress for a job interview in Dubai?

In general, it’s best to dress conservatively when interviewing for a job in Dubai.

For women, this means wearing skirts or trousers that are below the knee and blouses with high necklines.

It’s also important to avoid showing too much skin – no cleavage, bare shoulders or short skirts.

A smart suit is always a good option, as is a traditional Abaya robe if you’re female.

And for Men?

For men, business attire in Dubai typically involves a shirt and tie (or traditional thawb), and dark-coloured suits are always appropriate.

Be sure to avoid athletic shoes and ripped jeans – instead go for polished loafers or dress shoes.

The types of attire you might choose to wear will vary depending on the industry however.

If you’re interviewing for a position in marketing or the creative industries, then it might be a good idea to dress in a way that’s more relaxed and show off a little of your personality. However, it’s still important to look neat and professional.

For positions such as those in the construction industry, a smart casual look might be more appropriate. This could involve wearing a collared shirt and trousers with no tie for men, or a dress or skirt and blouse for women.

If you’re not sure, err on the side of caution…

If you’re not sure what to wear, it’s always better to be on the safe side and dress a little more formally than necessary. That way, you won’t run the risk of looking too casual or underdressed.

And whatever you do, don’t forget to groom yourself well and wear a smile!
